Another One?

Vancouver Canucks prospect Riley Patterson is quietly making a name for himself in the organization’s pipeline. Drafted 125th overall in the fourth round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, the 6’1” right-handed forward has quickly become one of the team’s most exciting young players. Versatile enough to play center or right wing, Patterson combines speed, skill, and a dangerous shot, making him a constant offensive threat.

Patterson’s development this season has been impressive. He was recently named OHL Player of the Month for December 2025, recording 19 points in just 11 games with the Niagara IceDogs. The 19-year-old has carried that momentum throughout the season, posting 49 points in 35 games (22 goals, 27 assists), ranking 4th in points and 6th in goals league-wide. It’s a strong and expected performance for a player in his draft-plus-two season.

His rise shouldn’t come as a surprise. Patterson first drew attention in the OHL with the Barrie Colts, scoring 62 points (29 goals, 33 assists) as a 17-year-old. He followed that up with another strong campaign in his draft-plus-one season, recording 59 points in 64 games (25 goals, 34 assists). His offensive tools have always been evident, and now it appears everything is finally coming together.

Patterson actually signed his entry-level contract (ELC) with the Canucks, on September 22, 2025, a move that is already proving to be a smart investment. Next season, Patterson is expected to join the Abbotsford Canucks, marking a significant step in his development. The jump to professional hockey will be challenging, but Abbotsford’s recent struggles mean Patterson should see plenty of ice time and opportunities to grow without the immediate pressure of having to deliver wins. This could provide the perfect environment for a young player still adjusting to the pro game.

Considering his draft position, Patterson’s trajectory is particularly impressive. The vast majority of players selected in the fourth round or later never reach the NHL, and many don’t even establish themselves in the AHL. To see this level of production and development from a fourth-round pick is a very encouraging sign for both Patterson and the Canucks, especially for an organization eager for depth at the center position.
